Hello, my name is Dominic!
I am a landscape architecture graduate from BOKU, based in Vienna. I believe that a project‘s resilience and sustainability must be rooted in its specific site characteristics. Instead of overwriting a place with detached concepts and imported materials, I think that open space design should build on what is already there and work from the ground up. Embracing the original place identity and building upon existing structures is therefore an integral part of my design philosophy. My decisions are guided by principles such as multifunctionality, re-usability, and animal-aided design. Through this approach, I aim to create beautiful yet robust green open spaces that serve human needs while also supporting local ecology, enhancing the microclimate, and conserving resources.
My Approach
A resilient landscape cannot be designed from the computer alone, nor can it rely on aesthetic intuition and hand drawings. Modern open space design should draw from both worlds. Even low-tech solutions can make use of high-tech workflows. In the same way, high-tech solutions sometimes need a low-tech reality check:
→ The Data
Before drawing a single line, I gather the facts. Depending on the project, I like to use GIS analysis, shadow mapping, climate modelling or online surveys to evaluate the environmental and socio-demographic conditions. This approach ensures that every design decision is based on an objective and systematic understanding of the site.
→ The Atmosphere
Data only tells half the story. In order to understand the character of a place, I need to step away from the screen and visit the site in person. This phase is all about immersing myself in the space. I take photographs, record sounds, sketch, observe human interactions and notice the little things. By doing this, I can ensure that my design ideas and concepts actually resonate with the people and ecology that inhabit the space.
